We are delighted to be taking part in Big Give's Christmas Challenge 2024. Between 3 and 10 December all donations of any value to the Tree Aid Big Give appeal page will be matched pound for pound. There is an urgent need to tackle hunger and food insecurity in the drylands of Africa, and your donation will help us scale up this work so more families can grow trees for food.
And between 3 and 10 December, your donations will be matched!
Erratic weather conditions - too much or too little rain, rising temperatures - caused by climate change is making it difficult for people in Africa's drylands to grow enough food to eat and sell.
As a result, millions of people experience food insecurity and undernourishment. Families often eat only once a day and fill up on starchy food like rice, which lacks vital nutrients. One in five people in Sub-Saharan Africa are undernourished. 58.4 million children experience stunted growth from lack of nutritious food – 4.5 times the number of children living in the UK.
Sadia Neindoo, who lives in northern Ghana, has six children, but because of financial issues, not all can attend school. Sadia herself dropped out of school early when her father died and she stayed at home to help her mother. Life has always been tough for her and she now spends her days working her family’s land to grow food to eat.
"It’s always on my mind that I need to care for the children. We are always worried, there are always problems. If I had knowledge and education I could earn more."
Trees improve soil fertility, resulting in families’ crops growing better, giving bigger yields. This means families will have more to eat, and also more to sell. And of course, trees provide a source of food themselves – nutritious fruits, nuts, seeds, and leaves.
Sadia has been fortunate to get involved in a recent Tree Aid project. She told us that by growing trees, the land is becoming more fertile, her community can grow more crops and vegetables, and the health of her children is improving.
There is an urgent need to support communities to tackle food insecurity today. More families need the support that Sadia has received. So many more families are only eating one meal a day and are facing real hunger.
Your donation can help us scale up our work into further communities so that more people like Sadia can grow trees, providing food for their families and an opportunity to earn an income.
From 3-10 December, all donations to our Big Give appeal of any value, up to a total of £50,000 will be matched.
We have secured pledges totaling £25,000 from a small group of Tree Aid supporters and have also been awarded a further £25,000 from the Helen and Michael Brown Charitable Trust via Big Give, which combined gives us a match pot of £50,000. This means that every donation, of any value, up to a total of £50,000 made to our Big Give online appeal will be matched, pound for pound! With your support, together we can raise £100,000 for communities in the drylands of Africa.
Your support could have an incredible impact across our six project areas in the Sahel region.
